Just recently a business neighbor had gone to purchase brand new refrigerators to replace her old ones in order to improve her business. I noticed she had purchased two large Haier Thermocool freezers and being someone with a bit of knowledge on fridges and freezer brands I decided to pop in to see the models she had bought and also to congratulate her for being able to afford such expense in these tough economic climate. In my conversations with her I discovered she had made her purchases without having any prior knowledge of what she really needed and after asking her a few questions about what problems she had with the old brands she was using and why she decided on the brand she finally settled for I realized she did not have any information about the product/ brand she was to buy but made her choice based on her budget. A lot of Nigerian consumers, including me are just like this my neighbor. We usually make our purchases 'in the dark' without a clue and rely on the information given to us by the shop assistants or our friends and family and most often times we end up following the trend and not necessarily buying what truly can satisfy our needs and ease our pain points.
Technology products are not the regular top of mind type of products where you have ready information printed out at the back of the product and you can easily read through the benefits and product label to see if this is really what suits you and then make a purchase without necessarily understanding the product specifications, model number, product lifetime, functionality and/or how it suits your usage etc. Most often, techs products such as home gadgets, mobile phones, computers, laptops, automobile parts, e.t.c require some level of technical knowledge prior to purchase in order to understand if the product best fits your needs or even your personality and perhaps your profession. For example, let's assume someone needed to purchase a new phone and had a budget of about N50,000.
What type of phone should this person be looking to buy? In answering this question there is a need to ask questions like: How old are you? What type of job do you do? How much do you earn?... Asking these questions will help to understand the needs of the buyer and appropriately recommend an appropriate phone that will give the desired functionality to the user taking other prevailing factors into consideration such as light conditions, usage,e.t.c
